I wrote this song after winter storm Juno in 2015. This storm brought gale force winds, blizzard conditions, and flooding from a storm surge. The main transformer to the island of Nantucket got coated in ice and shut down electricity to the entire island.
I had a difficult time during and in the aftermath of this storm. My power was off for about 24 hours and it took me 2 days to dig myself out. However as I read the paper I realized how lucky I was. There were many stories but one struck me the most. A man living in a cottage near the harbor woke up in the middle of the night to find 2 feet of water in his cottage. His saw record player and other possessions float by his bed. Outside transformers were exploding with downed utility poles.
The man climbed on chairs and other objects in order to avoid stepping in the hazardous water, pried open a window and was rescued by firefighters in a boat. The firefighters who rescued him and others that night were awarded Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year for their skillful and heroic efforts.

Lyrics

The Storm – By Susan J. Berman

There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight
It looks like a mighty storm.
Gale force gusting with a heavy snow
The forecaster got it wrong.
Off to the east squalls were increased
Fueled by a southern low.
Thought we’d get rain, that never came
But instead it’s pelting snow.

(Verse)
There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight
It clacks my window panes.
This white tempest packs a blizzard,
Combined with a hurricane.
My cupboard’s packed, My wood’s all stacked,
What help’s that gonna do?
It all went dark, with one big spark
When the main transformer blew.

There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight.

(instrumental)

Storm surge keeps rising,
With an icy tide.
Breaching my bedroom,
As I watch my things float by.

(instrumental)

(Verse)
There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight
Bringing peril to my home.
Can’t wade the water, submerged power lines,
It’s a danger zone.
Climbing on chairs, saying my prayers
I pry a window free.
Red flashing lights, cut through the night
Dear god please rescue me.

There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight
It looks like a mighty storm.
There’s a cold wind blowing from the north tonight
Bringing peril to my home.
