I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it. Written by Pat Alger and Austin Cunningham I was first introduced to the song by guitar great Jorma Kaukonen. He played a great version by Claire Lynch during a workshop. I immediately knew I wanted to learn the song but never imagined I’d record it.
“Be Ready to Sail” encompasses so many feelings and thoughts about my life, especially my life here on Nantucket. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that. “Be Ready to Sail” seemed to me a perfect cover song to include this collection.

Lyrics

Be Ready to Sail - Composer: Pat Alger Author & Austin Cunnigham, Music Publisher: Bait And Beer Music

(verse)
In a moment of reflection,
looking back upon my life.
There were times I changed direction
letting fortune pass me by.
There were seldom second chances,
and nothing so profound
as a lesson learned the hard way,
that I'll use next time around.

(Chorus)

Be ready to sail.
When a good wind blows your way,
be ready to sail.
Cast your fate upon the water,
catch a big wave by the tail.
And when a good wind blows your way,
be ready to sail.

(Verse)
There are those whose hearts are restless,
for a new and different shore.
Filled with second guesses,
the never climb on board.
While those with faith to guide them
leave all their fears behind,
chasing down their destination over on the other side.

(Chorus)

(Instrumental)

(Final Chorus)

Be ready to sail.
When a good wind blows your way,
be ready to sail.
Cast your fate upon the water,
catch a big wave by the tail.
And when a good wind blows your way,
be ready to sail.
Be ready to sail.
